Hello! My name is Cassie, and I'm an editor based in Seattle. I earned my M.S. in Professional and Technical Writing from Portland State University in June 2021. While a student, I was an editorial assistant for the Portland Review, an online literary journal for which I read, copyedited, and digitally formatted submissions. I also worked on collaborative client projects and conducted research to produce such deliverables as personas, a usability report, and webpages. The contents of my portfolio are divided under three main skills: Editing, Design, and Research. Under each skill’s page, artifacts are organized in reverse chronological order, with each accompanied by a brief overview and its associated competencies, personal traits, and technologies. I consider editing to be both a science and an art. Much of the process is objective, involving mechanical fixes to grammar and spelling via style guides and dictionaries. But at the same time, editing isn’t black and white; it requires careful consideration of subjective aspects like style, word choice, and organization. Therefore, an editor must know how to assess and address both the objective and subjective needs of a text in order to elevate it to its best version. For every piece that requires editing, I must recognize and adapt to the rhetorical situation at hand, which means being attuned to the author, publisher, and audience. Depending on the expectations and needs of the aforementioned stakeholders, as well as the genre of the text, my role as an editor can vary greatly. This is why adaptability and effective communication are essential to quality editing. |
